Highlights include, Jakob Lass’ Berlinale film TIGER GIRL, which will open the festival, Fatih Akin’s award-winning film GOODBYE BERLIN and the Swiss Academy Award submission THE DIVINE ORDER, by Petra Volpe.

GERMAN CURRENTSonce again welcomes Angelenos to experience young, exciting & ground-breaking new cinema from Germany, Austria and Switzerland in Los Angeles. From the Academy Award nomination for Maren Ade’s TONI ERDMANN, to Diane Kruger’s Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival, 2017 has been a very successful year for German Film. German films screened in all major film festivals, from the Berlinale, Cannes, Venice and Toronto, all the way to the Golden Globes and Oscars. The Goethe-Institut and American Cinematheque as producers of the festival are delighted to present some of these films to audiences in L.A. for the 11th Annual GERMAN CURRENTS FILM FESTIVAL. The festival will take place at the historic Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, from Friday, October 13th – Monday, October 16th, 2017.

The festivities will begin on Friday, October 13th, 2017, with an opening-night red-carpet gala attended by some of German cinema’s most exciting young talent. The opening film will be TIGER GIRL by Jakob Lass, which earlier this year had its successful debut at the Berlinale Panorama section. The four-day festivities will continue with the US Premiere of BEUYS by Andres Veiel, the US PREMIERE of TIGER MILK by Ute Wieland (nominated for German Screenwriter’s Award) Fatih Akin’s coming-of-age film GOODBYE BERLIN, which won numerous awards including the Bavarian Film Award 2017. German Currents is excited to present the Swiss submission to the Academy Awards THE DIVINE ORDER written and directed by Petra Volpe, who will attend this LA Premiere of her film. The Austrian entry at the festival this year is Dieter Berners Egon Schiele: Death & The Maiden. The event will conclude on Monday, October 16th with the popular and free children’s matinee screening for LA schools The Peppercorns & The Curse of the Black King.

In addition to the film screenings, German Currents will feature conversations with prolific German directors, composers, and actors. The popular Filmmaker Brunch will highlight two exciting German Filmmakers this year. After directors Roland Emmerich (INDEPENDENCE DAY) and Wolfgang Becker (GOOD BYE LENIN) German Currents and GABA Film Inititiative will welcome directors Jakob Lass (TIGER GIRL) and Ute Wieland (TIGER MILK) for their “Tribute Event” with a FOCUS: BERLIN panel this year. They will talk about their careers, their influences and TV and Film work in Germany. The Tribute event and Filmmaker Brunch is sponsored by the German Consulate General in LA and the Biltmore Hotel, a historic landmark in Downtown Los Angeles.

The coming months are indeed an exciting time for German cinema and culture in Los Angeles. This year’s festival is set as a highlight of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Berlin – Los Angeles Sister Partnership. In recognition of that, GERMAN CURRENTS will cooperate with achtung berlin film festival, Berlin’s second-largest film festival. This will allow LA audiences to view films created in Berlin or the state of Brandenburg.  Screenings will take place at the Goethe-Institut every Wednesday throughout September.

German Currents is produced and presented by the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles and the American Cinematheque and in cooperation with the German Consulate General, the Austrian Consulate General and the Consulate General of Switzerland and with the support of German Films, Deutsche Welle (DW) and The Friends of Goethe.
